Why Is It So Hard?!

Many times I hear people say they have a hard time sharing their faith. I must admit, there are times of difficulty with me too. Several years ago I began to ask the question “Why?”—Why IS it difficult for me to share my faith? Then it occurred to me… the million dollar answer. (Well maybe only about the $10 answer but a million sounds way cooler)

Here it is: The greatest level of impact carries the greatest level of anxiety!

Consider:
1) The $100 question compared to the Million Dollar question!
If I’m on a game show, I am WAY more nervous about the Million Dollar question than the $100 question. Why? Because there is A LOT more on the line!

2) Jumping off a chair compared to jumping out of a plane! Many times I will step in a chair to reach something or change a light bulb, and I’ll just jump down when I’m down. Not much anxiety there. But consider jumping out of a perfectly good airplane… a little different feeling. Why? MUCH more on the line once you jump!

3) Asking someone on a date compared to asking someone to marry you! I remember the first time I asked my wife, Ginger, on our first date. Apparently I was such a rookie with the ladies that she didn’t even know I was asking her on a date. :) I was a little nervous asking her out, but I knew I was graduating in a month and the embarrassment wouldn’t last forever. But on January 19, 1999 I was asking this same godly woman to marry me. Even though I was pretty sure she would say yes, I was still VERY nervous! Why? MUCH more on the line to ask someone to spend the rest of their life with you!

Now consider this… What can we do here on earth that carries a greater level of impact than sharing the truth of Jesus that someone might receive and be saved? Answer: NOTHING! Nothing carries a greater level of impact than the eternal destination of someone’s soul! And Jesus tells us in Luke 16 that when that destination is confirmed at death, there is NO changing of residency! NONE!

So, want to know why it’s so difficult to share our faith? Because there is NOTHING we do here on earth that is of greater value, greater importance, or greater impact than telling the Gospel truth that people might cross over from death to life!

What’s the answer to help calm these fears? The same words the Lord Jesus told His disciples knowing they were struggling too. “On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.” –Mark 13:9-11
