A few weeks ago I had an invite from a dad to write a note of encouragement to his son. His son is turning 13 and he wanted some of the men in his life to write something to encourage / challenge his son. I must admit I was a little nervous. I haven’t ever written anything like that before. So I prayed about it and began to write the things that God laid on my heart. When I was done I thought it was something I would actually like to share with all youth guys & their dads. This NOT an all-inclusive list! I realize there is more to be said. These were just the main three that came to mind.
We celebrate this next stage in your life as you continue to transition from being a boy to being a young man, and then to manhood. So I ask this question: “WHAT IS THE MEASURE OF MAN?” aka “What makes a man a real man?”.
There are many answers to this question that will come your way through your years ahead. BUT I would encourage you to
consider how the Bible answers this question– “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful… so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17
1: REAL MEN SERVE: Example_Jesus
In Mark 10:45 Jesus tells that He came not to be served, but to serve. When we think of real manhood, we need look no farther than the Lord Jesus Himself. Who deserves to be served more than Jesus? No one. And yet He tells us that His model is to serve. First, a real man thinks of others before himself. Serve others like the Lord Jesus served. Second, serve the local church. Jesus has a real love for the local church and you have been gifted by the Lord to enhance the ministry of the local church. A real man serves his local church with his God-given talents to serve like the Lord Jesus.
2: REAL MEN DON’T COMPRIMISE: Example_Shadrach, Meshach & Abednego
In Daniel 3 we see three men who stood strong in their faith. These men were faced with the strongest decision of their lives because their lives were literally on the line. Choose God and we will throw you into a fiery furnace with immenate death. Choose the worship of this world and we will spare your life. These three men stated, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and He will rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if He does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.” -Daniel 3:16-18 As you become a man you will begin to develop your faith. As you develop this core belief system, DON’T COMPROMISE. Just obey the Lord.
3: REAL MEN ARE UNASHAMED: Example_Paul
In Romans 1:16 Paul shares his heart with the church there in Rome. He says he is “not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.” As you grow older in life there will be times in your life when serving the Lord Jesus may not be the most acceptable thing. But real men stand firm in their faith (as Shadrach, Meshach & Abednego) because they are unashamed of their faith. Real Men are unashamed of Jesus because they are reminded of His charge. “If anyone is ashamed of me
and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.” -Luke 9:26
So as we consider “WHAT IS THE MEASURE OF A MAN?” we look at the truth of God’s Word. The measure of your life as you continue to grow as a man, look to:
1) serve the Lord Jesus
2) be unwilling to compromise in your faith
3) because you are unashamed of the Lord Jesus.
I will close with the words of wisdom written by King Solomon–known as the wisest King in Israel’s history: “Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of MAN.” -Ecclesiastes 12:13
